Overview

The Alimeen are a widespread but not numerous subjovian dwelling interstellar race.  As the first technologically advanced sentients encountered by Humans, the Alimeen maintain a close relationship with the Human Race and are equal partners with Humans in the over fifty systems of the Alimeen Confederacy.

Physical Description

The Alimeen are adapted to the turbulent atmosphere of their subjovian homeworld.  Adults mass 3-4,000kg and consist of a 3.5-4 meter long teardrop-shaped central body and five 5 meter long tentacles ending in flexible manipulative flippers.  Sensory organs, including five green globular eyes and dozens of lavender auditory and tactile cilia cluster around the beaked mouth located at the tapered end of the body.  The Alimeen skin is a rough epidermis generally purple in color with black dotted patterns that serve as visual identification.

Physiological and Social Development

The Alimeen are social omnivores inhabiting large cities afloat in the thick atmosphere of their worlds or tethered to high mountains.  Alimeen family units consist of four or more adults joined together for the purpose of raising an equal number of children to adulthood, a period of 20-30 standard years.  Alimeen are androgynous, reproducing sexually, with all family partners normally carrying a single offspring internally for a 1.5 standard year term.  Alimeen society is open and free with an emphasis on individual achievement in the arts, philosophy or commerce.  Adults also form "corporate" units of up to several hundred individuals, bent on commercially supporting some common endeavor.  These corporate units often survive for hundreds of years.

The natural Alimeen lifespan was approximately 250 standard years. Nano-mechanical treatments introduced by the Heshar during the Grand Federation period increased this to approximately 900 standard years. The dominant Alimeen philosophy believes in reincarnation, with eventual transcendence to a higher existence once an individual has achieved all it is destined to achieve in this universe, though some individuals have adopted a cybernetic afterlife storage approach similar to the B'dr'rak.

History

The Alimeen evolved from loose associations of hunter-gatherers to small communities living in the salvaged corpses of large floaters, mainly to secure safe places to raise their young.  Trade between communities led to larger settlements and to loose confederations of city states flowing with the trade winds and hugging the volcanic ranges of their home planet.  There was never any warfare or history of intentional killing between Alimeen. The discovery of metallurgy in the mountain communities and the study of astronomy by high flying explorers led to the growth of a technological industrial society by about 3000BC.

A planetary confederation government established in 2957BC remains in place today, though with necessary accommodations to support off-world colonies, Human citizens and relations with other species.  The Alimeen SETI project began broadcasting in 1980BC and resulted in contact with a Heshar-led Grand Federation expedition in 1840BC followed by an offer to join the Grand Federation in 1822BC as a Tertiary race with Heshar Primary patronage.  The Zhretra, Yerman and Cargomen were the Alimeen Secondary patrons.  The Alimeen established several small trading outposts across the Rimward extent of the Heshar-dominated Grand Federation, but no secondary colonies.  After the Heshar Fall, contact with the Grand Federation gradually fell off, and by 1000CE, the Alimeen had become a system-bound late fusion era society.

The Alimeen renaissance began with Human contact in 2226CE and subsequent membership in a succession of human states including the Confederation, the Kalmar Pact and the Empire of Humanity.  The Alimeen first alerted Humanity to the danger of the M'kkiae and assisted in that war at great cost to themselves.  Despite difficulties in communication, they shared what knowledge they retained of the Grand Federation and of the Heshar and they provided sound council to the Confederation Grand Senate.  Later, the Alimeen helped bring Humanity out of the Dark Age by establishing the economic union that became the Kalmar Pact.  The Alimeen introduced the gravstar drive to the Kalmar Pact and eventually developed the technology to a level not seen since the early days of the Founders.  During the period 2286-4750CE, the Alimeen settled over fifty worlds within Imperial space and maintained a reputation as trusted traders and brokers.

After the Disintegration Wars, Alimeen technology reverted to gravstar and fusion basics.  They restored and still maintain contact across their colony worlds with gravstar vessels that travel up to 400 light-years from Alimeen. These forty-eight surviving Alimeen worlds colony worlds constitute the Alimeen Confederacy, an independent interstellar state.  To supplement gravstar travel and maintain ties with Humanity, the Alimeen have build Human-environment habitats in every Alimeen system and have engaged in long-term terraformation efforts to develop Human suitable worlds in twelve systems.  These human outposts are legally part of the Alimeen Confederation and constitute "free-trade zones" with minimal legal and governmental regulation, though the Alimeen enforce a strict peace with a non-sentient robotic police force.  In 6552CE, the Confederation absorbed the world of Vulcan after the demise of the neutral League of Vulcan, leaving the Confederacy the last remaining neutral state for Human citizens in the Central Region.  Confederation Human enclaves have often been used for diplomatic negotiations between Human states and as refuges for political or religious dissidents.

Current Status

Currently, just over two billion Alimeen occupy 48 worlds scattered across the Human Space region.  The Alimeen Confederacy remains a neutral state dedicated to keeping peace in the Central Region of Human Space.  As more than half the Alimeen worlds are located within Terran Khalifate Space, relations between the Confederacy and the Khalifate are often strained.

Notes

Perhaps perversely because they are so different, the Alimeen have always remained close allies of Humanity.  Located less than 40 light years from Sol, the Alimeen were the first advanced technological alien society encountered by Humanity.  The Alimeen are well disposed to Humanity and will deal fairly and even generously with those who deal fairly with them.

The Alimeen cannot tolerate macrojump travel without full sedation and often find microjump travel uncomfortable.  Interstellar travel during the Chaotic Era involves gravstar vessels using modified vacuum distiller technology.  These often massive ships are capable of up to 36C travel at 18g acceleration and take between two and twenty-five years to reach various destinations across the Alimeen Confederation.
